Becoming prayerful women // Why should we pray?

One thing that Jesus constantly emphasizes in the Bible is prayer. He tells us to, ‘‘Watch and pray,’’ and to ‘’Pray without ceasing.’’  But why is it so important?

Prayer is a privilege
Prayer is the means by which we can talk to God and receive His supernatural help in our situations. When we pray, our heavenly Father hears us, and He has promised us in the Bible (1 John 5:14) that if what we ask is according to His will, He will answer us. We have the privilege of being able to talk to the Creator of the universe and the King of Kings and intercede on behalf of our friends, family and the whole world, and if it is according to God’s will, He will answer us! Wow!

    Prayer is intimate
Prayer is how we speak to our heavenly Father. It is a way of growing our relationship with God. Just like with friends and family, when we talk to God, we understand Him better, we get to know Him more and we become closer to Him and more aware of His will for our life. Prayer is not a religious rule, it’s an intimate conversation between our Father and us, His children.

Prayer is a great witness
Prayer can be a great witness to non-believers. We read in Acts 16:25 - “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.” Paul and Silas were praising God and praying, and the prisoners witnessed this. Now, I don’t mean for us to go out on the streets and pray in front of everyone to show off.  In fact, Jesus warns us not to do that in Matthew 6:5. But we can be a witness when praying as a family at a restaurant before eating; when praying before an exam when everyone else is stressing; when you offer to pray for a non-Christian friend who is struggling. Make prayer such a part of your everyday life that it becomes normal for your friends and family to see you praying. Become known as a prayerful woman.

Prayer is powerful
Through prayer, we see miracles happen. If we continue reading in Acts 16:26-34 we read that multiple things happened. Chains were broken, prison walls were shaken, and people were saved and baptised. These things don’t just happen in biblical times. I believe these things still happen today! I believe God still breaks chains; of depression, pain, loneliness, anxiety and addiction. I believe God still breaks down walls; barriers that we put up against our hearts. And I believe God still saves. When we pray, amazing things happen, not because of anything we do, but because we serve an amazing God. When we pray, change happens. Our mind-sets are changed. Our attitudes are changed. Our thoughts, actions and relationships are changed. When we pray WE are changed.

Colossians 4:2 – “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.”
