Confidence in Christ
Recently I’ve been really struggling with having confidence
in myself and who God made me to be. I understand who God says I am in my head,
but I don’t think I honestly believe it in my heart all the time. I think is
the same with many Christians, because, if we’re really honest, deep down, we
still don’t feel good enough or worthy of what God says about us. We still feel
insecure. Because if we truly believed what He says about us, we’d have a
confidence about who we are that couldn’t be shaken!
We live in an age where there is so much pressure, especially as women - from friends, family, social media, celebrities and peers - to act in a certain way, dress a certain way, have a certain type of personality, do certain things etc. We are constantly surrounded by and filling our head with lies about who we should be and what we should look like. But trying to meet up to the world’s standards is A. Impossible B. Draining and C. Unfulfilling.
Acts 4:13 says, ‘’ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter
and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they
marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.’’ Peter and John’s confidence was noticed to be different to
normal confidence and people recognized that it was because they had been with
Jesus. I don’t know about you, but I want that kind of
confidence! Confidence which only comes from knowing and spending time with
Jesus. That comes from having an identity fully in Christ. Confidence that no
matter what anyone says, we are enough - we are children of God and daughters
of the King of kings!
Trying to be all the things the world says you should be
will only lead to confusion and more insecurity. It will lead to constant
discontentment with yourself and not feeling good enough. You’ll be constantly
comparing yourself to others, and like Theodore Roosevelt famously said,
‘Comparison is the thief of joy.’ If you are constantly comparing yourself to
others, you’ll never be happy. You will be forever looking at what you don’t
have, rather than what you do. You’ll never believe you’re good enough. You’ll
never see your worth.
And the thing is, none of that stuff defines us! What we
wear, our career, our friendships, how we do our hair or makeup, how we talk,
what we do, whether we have a boyfriend, our past – none of that defines who we
are! We are defined only by the fact that we are children of God. THAT is our identity
and nothing else! When you become a Christian, you receive a new identity. You
now belong to Jesus, and are united with Him. You become an heir to the throne,
and a citizen of heaven! How incredible!
We don’t have to try and live up to any standards of the
world because God loves us so much and He proved that to us by sending His one
and only Son to die a slow and painful death for us on the cross. In John
15:13, we read: ‘’Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s
life for his friends.’’ There is no greater way of showing your love for someone
than dying for them, and that is exactly what Jesus did! He died in a way which
we cannot deny shows his great and never-ending love for us!
But not only did God send Jesus to die to show us how much
he loves us, He also gave us the Bible – a whole love letter written for us! In
the bible we find so many comforting words about who we are to Christ and who
we are in Christ and we’re going to look at some of those now. Because if we
truly believe what God says about us and we have the foundations of our
identity built on Christ, no matter what the world and others say about us, we
will know our true worth, and we will be able to ignore the lies of this world
and live a life of confidence in who we are in Christ and Christ alone.
So below I have picked out just a handful of the things God
says about you:
He knows you (Psalm 139:1). He knows when you sit and when
you rise up (Psalm 139:2). He formed you in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13) and
you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). You are made in His
image (Genesis 1:27) and in Him you live, move and have your being (Acts 17:28).
We are His offspring (Acts 17:28). We are His children (1 John 3:1) and we are
part of His chosen generation – His special people (1 Peter 2:9). Through
Christ you are Holy and blameless and above reproach (Colossians 1:22) and you
have been redeemed and forgiven through Christ’s blood (Ephesians 1:7). He
chose us to be in Him before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4) and in
Him you are complete (Colossians 2:10). You were once far off, but you have
been brought near to God through Christ’s blood (Ephesians 2:13). You are holy
and beloved (Colossians 3:12) and you are a citizen of heaven (Philippians
3:20). Christ has made you free (Galatians 5:1) and you are a new creation (2
Corinthians 5:17). He calls us His friends (John 15:15) and He loved us while
we were sinners (Romans 5:8). We are His
workmanship and created in Christ (Ephesians 2:10). He quiets us with His love,
He rejoices over us with gladness and exults over us with singing. He is in our
midst (Zephaniah 3:17) He loves us (John 15:9). We no longer live, but Christ
lives in us (Galatians 2:10) In HIM we have boldness and confidence (Ephesians
3:11-12).
THIS is who you are and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
Ephesians 3:11-12 – ‘’ according to
the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we
have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

Great post :) Are you making this a Friday thing? I think I know what I'll look forward to every Friday then!
ReplyDeleteBack to the topic though, one of my favourite scriptures is Jeremiah 29:11. It says: "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." It gives me reassurance for what the Lord has planned for me.
See you next Friday? xx
Nothing else defines us, other than ourselves. God has created each and every one of us and made us unique. He has plans and a purpose for every one of us.
DeleteThanks Miriam. Yes, my plan is to post every Friday afternoon :) I also find so much comfort in that verse! Yes, we are unique and created with a purpose and for a purpose and nothing defines us other than the fact that we are His. X
ReplyDeleteGreat article Chloe, very encouraging! Thank you:)
